FAQs for Business Appraisers
The genesis of this post is based on an email I received from Rod Burkert recommending a book by Marcus Sheridan titled “They Ask, You Answer”. Simply stated buyers come to a provider of services or product with “questions already-in-their heads”.
Many of my prospective and actual business valuation clients have asked me many different questions over the years. This is simply because they need to know and do not have an idea of what we do, how we do and how much we charge for the service we provide!
How long have you been doing this work?
When I started my CPA practice over 40 years ago I knew with my background in finance that consulting and as it turns out business valuation would be my calling. I must say that in college I thought my career would be in the securities industry as a security analyst.
Fast forward to the late ‘80’s and my first opportunity to perform a business valuation for a privately owned company arose. Without experience in valuation I reached out to a Yale professor in entrepreneurship who performed the work. I was hooked!
In the 90’s I began the process of educating myself and getting professional designations ultimately being recognized by credentials from:
- American Society of Appraisers (ASA)
- AICPA (ABV)
- NACVA (CVA)
- Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors (CM&AA)
So, the short answer is over 25 years of experience in valuing many different companies, in many industries, for different purposes.
